Type
Cryotherapy
Duration
15 min
A 15-minute targeted cold therapy session using a cryo wand that delivers concentrated cold air to a specific area of the body. The localised approach allows the therapist to focus on individual joints, muscle groups, or injury sites that need attention — such as a sore knee, shoulder, or lower back. The concentrated cold penetrates deeper into the targeted tissue than whole-body exposure, making it well-suited for acute injury management, post-surgical recovery support, and chronic pain in specific areas.
Localised cryotherapy at Recovery Hub delivers focused cold therapy to a single area of the body using a handheld cryo wand that directs a stream of extremely cold air to the treatment zone. Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, which triggers a systemic response across the entire body, localised treatment concentrates the cold-shock effect on a specific joint, muscle group, or region that requires targeted attention. The therapist moves the wand in controlled patterns over the treatment area for approximately 15 minutes, gradually lowering skin temperature in the targeted zone. This localised cooling constricts blood vessels in the area, reducing blood flow and associated swelling. Anti-inflammatory pathways are activated at the cellular level, and nerve conduction velocity decreases, which may provide temporary pain relief. When the cold source is removed, blood vessels dilate and fresh, oxygen-rich blood rushes into the treated area, carrying nutrients that support tissue repair. The contrast between vasoconstriction and subsequent vasodilation creates a pumping effect that may help clear metabolic waste products and reduce oedema. Localised cryotherapy is particularly well-suited for clients dealing with specific concerns rather than general recovery. Common applications include post-exercise soreness in a particular muscle group, chronic joint inflammation such as in the knees or shoulders, tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, post-surgical recovery support for soft tissue procedures, and acute sports injuries where ice packs are too mild but whole-body cryo is unnecessary. The session can be combined with whole-body cryotherapy on the same visit — some clients do a localised session on a problem area first, followed by the whole-body chamber for systemic benefits. No special preparation is required beyond exposing the treatment area.
