Contrast Therapy
Type
Contrast Therapy
Duration
45 min
A structured 45-minute hot-cold circuit alternating between sauna and cold plunge in Super Young's dedicated wet zone. The rapid temperature shifts create a vascular pump effect — blood vessels dilate in the heat then constrict in the cold — boosting circulation, flushing metabolic waste, reducing inflammation, and accelerating recovery. The protocol typically involves three to four rounds of heat followed by cold immersion, with rest between cycles.
Contrast therapy at Super Young follows a guided hot-cold protocol in the clinic's wet zone. Over 45 minutes, you alternate between the sauna (infrared or Finnish, depending on availability) and the cold plunge pool, cycling through three to four rounds. Each heat phase lasts roughly eight to twelve minutes, raising your core temperature and dilating blood vessels to increase blood flow. You then move to the cold plunge for two to five minutes, which triggers rapid vasoconstriction — blood vessels narrow, pushing blood back toward the core. This oscillation creates a pumping effect through the vascular and lymphatic systems, accelerating the clearance of metabolic waste products like lactate while delivering fresh oxygen and nutrients to tissues. Research on contrast water therapy shows it may reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) more effectively than passive recovery, and athletes across endurance and team sports use it routinely after competition. Beyond recovery, regular contrast therapy is associated with improved cardiovascular flexibility — the ability of blood vessels to dilate and constrict efficiently — and reduced perceived fatigue. Super Young's wet zone is designed for this protocol: the sauna and plunge pool are adjacent, minimising transition time. Towels, showers, and organic products are included. Staff can recommend how to integrate contrast therapy with other modalities like cryotherapy or Normatec compression for a layered recovery session.
