Pressotherapy — Machine Lymphatic Drainage (BTL Lymphastim 6000)

Pressotherapy at Sportklinik uses the BTL Lymphastim 6000 — a medical-grade sequential air-compression system consisting of inflatable sleeve compartments that envelope the limbs and rhythmically inflate and deflate. The device mimics the natural muscle pump that drives lymphatic circulation, assisting the body in clearing excess fluid, metabolic waste, and inflammatory proteins from tissues. It is used both clinically — for post-surgical oedema, lymphoedema, and sports recovery — and as a standalone wellness treatment for leg heaviness, poor circulation, and relaxation. Sessions last 30 minutes and can be booked as a standalone appointment or added to physiotherapy sessions.

The BTL Lymphastim 6000 is a professional sequential air-compression (pressotherapy) device that applies controlled, progressive pneumatic pressure to the lower limbs and, with appropriate attachments, to the abdomen and upper limbs. The Sportklinik unit is the medical-grade variant also used in post-surgical lymphoedema management — not a spa-grade consumer machine. Inflatable sleeve compartments fill sequentially from distal to proximal (foot to thigh, hand to shoulder), replicating the physiological direction of lymph flow and venous return. Each inflation–deflation cycle runs 3–8 seconds per chamber, with overall pressure settings calibrated to the patient's condition and tolerance. Clinically, pressotherapy addresses conditions involving impaired lymphatic or venous return: post-surgical swelling (particularly after knee or hip procedures), chronic lymphoedema, oedema associated with varicose veins or venous insufficiency, and inflammatory joint swelling. The rhythmic mechanical pump clears excess interstitial fluid into the lymphatic channels, reducing tissue congestion, improving oxygen delivery to muscles, and accelerating the clearance of lactate and metabolic by-products after training. From a wellness and recovery perspective, it is an effective tool for relieving tired, heavy legs after prolonged standing or travel, reducing puffiness, improving superficial circulation, and providing a deeply relaxing session. Many patients report subjective improvements in skin tone, reduced cellulite, and better sleep following a course of sessions — effects attributed to improved microcirculation and reduced subcutaneous fluid retention. Contraindications include uncontrolled hypertension, cardiac failure, active deep vein thrombosis, acute inflammatory skin conditions, fever, pregnancy, epilepsy, kidney disease, active cancer in the treatment area, and patients with implanted electronic devices. The clinic assesses each patient prior to the first session. A standard course for rehabilitation or lymphoedema management is typically 10–15 sessions, scheduled daily or every other day in the acute phase and 2–3 times per week for maintenance.
