CT Scan (Computed Tomography)

Type

CT Scan

Duration

30 min

SPEA Olomouc operates a multidetector multispiral CT scanner — a latest-generation helical CT capable of fast, high-resolution cross-sectional imaging of the brain, spine, chest, and abdomen. The CT department is staffed by four radiologists and five radiologic assistants and operates Monday to Thursday from 7:00 to 15:30. Every scan includes CD with digital images and a written radiologist report for your referring physician, with standard results within seven days and a STATIM track for urgent cases. Self-pay and international patients are accepted; pricing is available on request via the direct department line.

Computed tomography (CT) at SPEA Olomouc uses a multidetector multispiral scanner — the technology that allows multiple detector rows to acquire simultaneous slices in a continuous helical motion, dramatically reducing scan time compared to older single-detector units and enabling thinner, higher-resolution slices through any body region. The CT department within SPEA's radiology suite covers brain (including stroke and mass lesion protocols), spinal column across all segments, thoracic organs (lung parenchyma, mediastinum, pulmonary vasculature), and abdominal and pelvic organs. Targeted gastrointestinal tract protocols — for example enterography for small bowel assessment — are also available on the department's menu. All examinations are interpreted by radiologists — the department holds four specialist radiologists — and the written report is prepared for the referring physician. Patients receive a CD with their full digital image data, enabling them to share images with specialists in other hospitals or in other countries without loss of quality. Standard report turnaround is within seven working days; a STATIM (urgent) pathway is available for clinically urgent referrals. Preparation before your scan varies by the region being examined. For abdominal and pelvic CT, you must fast for a minimum of four hours before the appointment and are asked to hydrate with clear fluids (approximately 250 ml per hour during the preceding hours), avoiding coffee, milk, and alcohol. Smoking should be avoided in the fasting window. You will need to remove dental prostheses, jewellery, piercings, and any metal objects from the body before entering the scanning room. Continue any regular prescription medications as normal unless your referring physician has advised otherwise. Diabetic patients on metformin should discuss their medication management with their physician before contrast-enhanced CT. Contrast studies — scans where iodine-based contrast medium is injected intravenously to highlight blood vessels and perfused tissue — require additional preparation: the contrast solution is provided by the department and instructions given at booking. Contrast allergies and renal function are assessed before contrast administration. For international patients and self-payers without Czech health insurance, the CT department accepts direct bookings via telephone (+420 585 505 444). Pricing is provided on request based on the scan type — the department does not publish a fixed self-pay price list online, but the department coordinator Bc. Jiří Mík is the direct contact for booking and pricing queries. For patients travelling from Germany, Austria, Slovakia, or Poland, SPEA's central Olomouc location is accessible by rail and road, making it a practical option for a specific imaging investigation during a regional visit.
