Hot Sauna (90°C)

Type

Sauna

Duration

1 hour

Finnish-style dry heat sauna at 90°C in a large communal chamber, promoting deep muscle relaxation, cardiovascular conditioning, and heat shock protein activation.

Shelter's sauna is a large-format Finnish-style dry heat chamber measuring 5.5 m × 4.5 m, operating at 90°C — toward the upper end of therapeutic sauna temperatures. At this temperature, core body temperature rises rapidly, triggering heat shock protein (HSP) expression, growth hormone release, and a significant cardiovascular response equivalent in some studies to moderate aerobic exercise. The hormetic heat stress from regular sauna use has been associated in epidemiological research (including the Kuopio cohort) with reduced all-cause mortality, lower cardiovascular event risk, and improved markers of metabolic health. For active individuals, the sauna is particularly effective when used post-training to accelerate glycogen replenishment and reduce muscle stiffness, or pre-cold-plunge as part of a contrast therapy protocol. Shelter's sauna capacity accommodates small groups, making it suitable for post-training recovery with training partners. Sessions are typically 10–20 minutes per round, interspersed with cold pool immersion and warm pool recovery. The facility is open on a day-pass or weekly membership basis, with the membership rate fixed for life at the rate you join. Shelter positions the sauna as the centrepiece of its 'Enter Weary, Exit Whole' recovery ritual — a deliberate, structured approach to physical and mental restoration.
