Cold Plunge

Contrast cold-water immersion using two dedicated cold plunge pools, designed to reduce inflammation, accelerate muscle recovery, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
Shelter's cold plunge offering centres on two purpose-built cold pools (each 2.2 m × 1.5 m), maintained at temperatures calibrated for therapeutic cold-water immersion. Cold exposure at this level triggers a cascade of physiological adaptations: release of norepinephrine (a potent anti-inflammatory neurotransmitter), improved cold shock protein expression, and activation of the parasympathetic nervous system — promoting the rest-and-digest state that underpins recovery. Regular cold plunge practice has been associated with reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), improved mood and stress resilience, enhanced cardiovascular tone, and — when combined with sauna — a robust hormetic stress response that supports long-term adaptation. At Shelter, the cold plunge is designed as part of a full contrast therapy circuit: members move between the 90°C sauna, cold pools, and warm pool in a structured ritual. This contrast approach is supported by research on cardiovascular adaptation and has deep roots in Nordic sauna culture. Sessions are available on a day-pass or membership basis, making the cold plunge accessible whether you're a daily practitioner or recovering from a single hard training session. Shelter's facility is open to all fitness levels — no experience with cold immersion is required, and staff can guide first-timers through a safe, gradual protocol.
