About

The SGH Hyperbaric & Diving Medicine Centre is Singapore's first comprehensive and integrated hyperbaric facility serving the civilian community, based within Singapore General Hospital at Outram Road. Operating under the SingHealth Academic Medical Centre, the centre brings together specialist physicians, hyperbaric nurses, and diving medicine experts to deliver evidence-based care under rigorously controlled clinical conditions. The centre's multiplace hyperbaric chamber accommodates up to 10 patients simultaneously and is pressurised to therapeutic levels typically ranging from 2 to 3 atmospheres absolute (ATA). Patients breathe 100% pure oxygen through a hood or mask during treatment sessions that generally last 90 to 120 minutes. The multiplace format allows attendants and nursing staff to accompany patients inside the chamber, making it suitable for critically ill, ventilator-dependent, or post-surgical patients who require continuous monitoring. Clinical indications managed at the centre include decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, problem wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers and radiation-induced tissue damage, crush injuries, compartment syndrome, gas gangrene, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and refractory osteomyelitis. The 24-hour emergency diving medicine line ensures divers experiencing in-water injuries can access immediate specialist triage at any time of day. As a hospital-based programme, all treatments are ordered by a referring or in-house physician, and the centre works closely with SGH's surgical, wound care, and internal medicine departments. Patients typically undergo a course of multiple sessions as part of an individualised treatment plan. The centre is recognised as one of the leading clinical HBOT programmes in Southeast Asia.
