The Russian banya at SaunaPark Platinium is a traditional Slavic steam bath that combines high heat with elevated humidity — a distinctly different thermal environment from the dry Finnish sauna or the moderate infrared zone. The banya operates at temperatures comparable to a Finnish sauna but introduces periodic bursts of steam by pouring water over heated stones, dramatically increasing humidity and intensifying the perceived heat. What sets the banya apart from a conventional steam room is the venik ritual — the traditional practice of beating or brushing the body with bundles of birch branches (venik). The birch leaves release essential oils and phytoncides when heated, producing a distinctive herbal aroma. The rhythmic slapping motion drives hot, humid air against the skin, enhances circulation to the treated areas, and produces a mild exfoliation effect. In Russian bathing tradition, the venik ritual is considered the centrepiece of the banya experience, believed to stimulate lymphatic drainage, open pores, and promote the release of toxins through the skin. The combination of high heat, high humidity, and mechanical stimulation from the venik produces a more intense physiological response than dry heat alone. The humid air prevents efficient sweat evaporation, so core temperature rises more rapidly.
