CT Lung Screening

Duration

30 min

High-resolution CT of the lungs for tumour staging, pulmonary vascular assessment, computer-assisted lesion analysis, and diagnosis of chronic lung disease including COPD. Led by specialist thoracic radiologists Dr. Ursula Johst and PD Dr. Daniel Maxien at Munich-Pasing.

RZM's thoracic imaging programme combines digital chest X-ray, high-resolution CT (HRCT), and in selected cases MRI to assess diseases of the lungs, major intrathoracic vessels, and pleura. The CT component is the most clinically versatile, covering a broad range of indications that X-ray alone cannot resolve. For oncological patients, thoracic CT is central to initial tumour staging and subsequent response monitoring — characterising pulmonary nodules and masses, assessing mediastinal lymph node involvement, and detecting pleural metastases. The computer-assisted detection (CAD) programme is used for round heart diagnostics, applying automated algorithms to flag suspicious lesions and assist the reporting radiologist in consistent follow-up comparisons over serial examinations. Pulmonary vascular CT is performed when pulmonary embolism, arteriovenous malformation, or pulmonary hypertension is suspected; the high temporal resolution of the Somatom AS64 captures the vasculature at peak contrast opacification with minimal motion artefact. For diffuse parenchymal lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, or sarcoidosis, HRCT provides the spatial resolution to characterise the pattern and distribution of disease and guide treatment decisions. The thoracic imaging team at RZM-Pasing is led by Dr. med. Ursula Johst and PD Dr. med. Daniel Maxien, both board-certified specialists in diagnostic radiology with dedicated expertise in thoracic pathology. Dose-reduction protocols are applied to all thoracic examinations, with particular attention to lower-dose approaches for follow-up scans in young patients or those requiring frequent monitoring. Written findings are available on the day of examination and transmitted directly to the referring physician.
