Knee MRI

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

25 min

Native 3T MRI of a single knee joint evaluating menisci, cruciate and collateral ligaments, articular cartilage, and subchondral bone. High-resolution protocol with no radiation.

The knee MRI at Private Access Wien uses the Siemens MAGNETOM Verio 3 Tesla scanner to deliver high-resolution imaging of the internal knee structures. The dedicated knee coil optimises signal in the region of interest, and the wide 70-centimetre bore means the patient lies comfortably without their knee entering a narrow tunnel. The imaging protocol includes sagittal proton-density and T2-weighted fat-suppressed sequences for meniscal and cruciate assessment, coronal images for the collateral ligaments and cartilage surfaces, and axial slices through the patellofemoral compartment. The radiologist systematically evaluates both menisci for horizontal, vertical, radial, and complex tears; the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments for signal changes and dimensional integrity; articular cartilage across all three compartments for focal defects and diffuse thinning; and the subchondral bone for marrow oedema, occult fractures, and osteochondral lesions. The 3T field strength is particularly advantageous for cartilage evaluation, where subtle surface irregularities and early thinning that may be missed on 1.5T systems can be reliably detected. This is relevant for patients considering cartilage-repair procedures or those in early-stage osteoarthritis management who want an objective imaging baseline. The examination takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Private Access Wien offers early morning and late-afternoon slots to accommodate working patients.
