Ultrasound is radiation-free and well suited to assessing breast tissue alongside the hands-on clinical exam. The Targeted Breast Examination is a stand-alone breast-health check for women who want their breasts assessed specifically, outside a full preventive screening. It combines two complementary methods: a careful clinical breast examination by the oncologist, who palpates the breast tissue and the surrounding lymph-node areas and takes a relevant history, and a breast ultrasound, which images the tissue without any radiation. Used together, the clinical exam and ultrasound give a fuller picture than either alone, and the oncologist provides an individual assessment of risk based on the findings and the patient's history. Ultrasound is particularly useful for evaluating breast tissue, helping to characterise lumps as cysts or solid areas and to examine denser breast tissue; it is painless, involves no ionising radiation and requires no special preparation. The visit is short — typically around half an hour — and the oncologist explains the findings and any recommendation, whether that is routine reassurance, a suggested interval for the next check, or referral for further investigation if anything needs clarifying.
