About this treatment
Local cryotherapy uses a device to deliver a stream of very cold air or gas to a specific body area, rapidly cooling the skin and underlying tissue to temperatures as low as around −160°C for a short period. It is used in physiotherapy as an adjunct to help manage pain, acute inflammation and swelling.
How it works
The intense, brief cold causes local blood vessels to constrict and then dilate, which is associated with reduced inflammation and swelling, numbing of pain in the treated area, and support for recovery after injury or intensive treatment. Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, the local device targets a single region such as a joint, tendon or muscle.
