It is used in physiotherapy as an adjunct to help manage pain, acute inflammation and swelling. **How it works:** The intense, brief cold causes local blood vessels to constrict and then dilate, which is associated with reduced inflammation and swelling, numbing of pain in the treated area, and support for recovery after injury or intensive treatment. Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, the local device targets a single region such as a joint, tendon or muscle. **The session:** The physiotherapist applies the cooling device over the target area for a short period — typically a few minutes. The cold sensation is strong but brief. It is often combined with other physiotherapy modalities or exercise within a treatment plan. **Aftercare:** No downtime is required.
