A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth that is beyond saving or is causing problems — common reasons include deep decay or a fracture that cannot be restored, severe gum disease that has loosened the tooth, or crowding being addressed as part of an orthodontic plan. Afterwards you are given clear aftercare instructions — biting on gauze to control bleeding, avoiding rinsing, smoking and hot drinks for the first day, and keeping the area clean — to help the socket heal and reduce the risk of a painful dry socket.
