Second Medical Opinion

A second medical opinion at MOÚ gives patients an independent expert review of an existing cancer diagnosis and treatment plan before they commit to a course of care. It is aimed at people — including international patients — who have been diagnosed or had a treatment proposed elsewhere and want a second, specialist perspective from one of Europe's OECI-designated comprehensive cancer centres.

The core service is a clinical oncologist's review of the documentation the patient brings: outpatient and hospitalisation reports, the stated diagnosis, prior results and the proposed treatment plan. The oncologist assesses whether the diagnosis and plan are consistent with current standards and issues a documented opinion. For tissue diagnoses, the institute's pathologists offer histology second-readings at tiers matched to case complexity: re-evaluation of a small diagnostic sample such as a punch or endoscopic micro-excision; review of a fully resected tumour or a differential work-up for cancer of unknown primary; and the most detailed option, a comparison of two or more tumour foci.
