Local Cryotherapy

Local cryotherapy delivers concentrated cold therapy to a specific area of the body — typically a joint, muscle group, or injury site. Unlike whole-body cryotherapy which produces a systemic response, local cryotherapy focuses the therapeutic cold directly where it is needed, achieving deeper tissue cooling in the targeted region.

The treatment uses a directed cold air stream applied to the skin surface over the affected area for approximately 3 minutes. The skin temperature in the treated zone drops rapidly, triggering local vasoconstriction and numbing of pain receptors (nociceptors). Upon removal of the cold stimulus, the area undergoes reactive vasodilation — a rush of blood flow that delivers oxygen and nutrients to support tissue repair.

Local cryotherapy is commonly used for acute sports injuries (sprains, strains, contusions), chronic joint conditions (arthritis, tendinitis), post-surgical recovery, and localised muscle soreness. It can be used as a standalone treatment or combined with whole-body cryotherapy for a comprehensive cold therapy session — the whole-body session provides systemic benefits while the local treatment addresses the specific problem area.
