IFCOR's Diabetes Screening panel pairs fasting glucose with HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) — the two-marker combination recommended by international diabetes guidelines for both screening and monitoring. Fasting glucose captures the immediate blood sugar level at the moment of collection; HbA1c reflects average blood glucose over the preceding 8–12 weeks by measuring the percentage of haemoglobin molecules that have been irreversibly glycated. Together they detect pre-diabetes and diabetes more reliably than either marker alone. Adults with diabetes risk factors (BMI above 25, family history, gestational diabetes, hypertension, polycystic ovaries) or anyone wanting to confirm current glycaemic status — suitable for initial screening and for monitoring known pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes.
Preparation required
Fast for 8–12 hours. Water is permitted. Do not have any glucose-containing drinks or food. Inform staff of any insulin or diabetes medications — HbA1c can be collected non-fasting, but the glucose portion requires fasting.
