A 50-minute session on a traditional Japanese ganbanyoku heated stone bed, using far-infrared heat from natural volcanic stones to promote gentle detoxification through deep sweating at lower temperatures than conventional saunas.
Ganbanyoku (岩盤浴, literally 'bathing on hot rocks') is a traditional Japanese thermal therapy where the client lies on a bed of naturally heated volcanic stones, typically lava stone or black silica, that emit far-infrared radiation. Unlike conventional saunas that heat the air to 70-100°C, ganbanyoku operates at much lower ambient temperatures (40-50°C) while the stone surface itself radiates gentle, penetrating heat. This lower-temperature approach produces a deep, sustained sweat without the cardiovascular stress and discomfort of high-temperature saunas. The far-infrared wavelengths emitted by the heated stones (typically 4-14 micrometres) penetrate several centimetres into tissue, warming the body from within rather than heating the skin surface. This deeper penetration promotes vasodilation in the capillary beds, improving peripheral circulation and facilitating the transport of metabolic waste products to the skin for excretion through sweat. Japanese research on ganbanyoku has documented increases in blood flow, reductions in muscle stiffness, and improvements in autonomic nervous system balance after regular sessions. The sweating induced by ganbanyoku differs qualitatively from exercise-induced or conventional sauna sweating. Studies comparing sweat composition across different heating modalities suggest that far-infrared-induced sweat may contain higher concentrations of certain heavy metals and environmental toxins, though this research is still evolving. The gentle nature of the therapy makes it accessible to individuals who cannot tolerate the heat stress of traditional saunas, including elderly clients and those with cardiovascular concerns. At 60 PLN (approximately €14), Holy SPA & Cafe's ganbanyoku session is remarkably affordable — this is one of the lowest-priced wellness therapies available in Krakow and makes regular detoxification sessions financially accessible. The 50-minute duration allows sufficient time for the body to reach a deep, sustained sweat while maintaining the meditative, unhurried quality that characterises the Japanese ganbanyoku tradition.
