Extraction
Duration

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that cannot be saved by other treatment, for example because of severe decay, fracture, advanced gum disease or crowding. At FROE extractions are carried out under local anaesthetic, with the option of the computer-controlled Wand system for comfortable injections, and more complex cases are handled surgically by the clinic's oral surgery specialist. Replacement options such as an implant can be planned at the same visit.
Sometimes a tooth is too damaged or diseased to be repaired or root-treated and needs to be removed. Common reasons include extensive decay, a tooth broken below the gum, advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth, or a tooth that is impacted or causing crowding. While keeping natural teeth is always the first aim, a timely extraction can relieve pain and prevent infection from spreading. At FROE the area is first thoroughly numbed with local anaesthetic, and the clinic's computer-assisted Wand system can be used to make the injection itself more comfortable. A straightforward extraction involves gently loosening and removing the tooth, while a surgical extraction, used for teeth that are broken down or impacted, may involve a small incision and is performed by the clinic's experienced oral surgeon. Afterwards you are given clear aftercare instructions to help the socket heal and to reduce the risk of complications such as a dry socket. Because losing a tooth leaves a gap that can affect chewing and allow neighbouring teeth to drift, the dentist can discuss replacement options, including a dental implant, bridge or denture, and where appropriate plan bone preservation at the time of extraction. The fee depends on whether the tooth is single- or multi-rooted and on how surgical the removal is; this is assessed beforehand, often with an X-ray.
