Type

CT Scan

Duration

20 min

A dental CBCT (cone-beam CT) scan produces a detailed three-dimensional image of the teeth, jawbone and surrounding structures, which is essential for planning implants and assessing surgery, impacted teeth and complex root canals. FROE performs CBCT in-house on a Vatech scanner, so imaging and treatment planning happen in one place. The scan is quick, taken standing, and gives the precision that flat X-rays cannot.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a specialised dental scan that captures the mouth and jaws in three dimensions. Where a conventional X-ray gives a flat picture, CBCT lets the dentist see bone height and width, the position of nerves and sinuses, impacted teeth and the fine anatomy of tooth roots from any angle. This level of detail is particularly important for planning dental implants safely and accurately, and for assessing surgical extractions and complex endodontic cases. At FROE the scan is carried out on an in-house Vatech CBCT unit, so the imaging needed to plan treatment is available on the spot rather than referred elsewhere. The scan itself takes only a short time: you stand still while the scanner rotates around your head, and no injection or special preparation is required. The resulting 3D data set is reviewed by the dentist or implant specialist and used to plan the precise position of implants or the approach to surgery, which is associated with more predictable, safer treatment. Like all X-ray imaging, CBCT involves a small dose of radiation and is taken only when the clinical benefit justifies it; the clinic also offers lower-dose two-dimensional options, such as single intraoral and panoramic X-rays, where a full 3D scan is not needed. The dentist will explain why a particular type of image is recommended for your case.
