The diode laser targets melanin in the hair follicle and disables it during the growth phase; a course of around five sessions at 3–6 week intervals treats the full follicle population across its growth cycles.

The MeDioStar is a clinical-grade high-power diode laser whose energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft, heating and disabling the follicle's regenerative cells while integrated skin cooling protects the surface. Because only follicles in the active anagen growth phase respond, hair must be treated across several cycles — Formositas plans roughly five sessions at 3–6 week intervals, after which the large majority of follicles in the treated zone stop producing hair, with occasional maintenance sessions thereafter. Preparation matters: do not pluck or wax for three weeks before (the follicle must be present), shave the area 24–48 hours ahead, and avoid sun exposure. Afterwards expect mild redness for a few hours, apply high SPF immediately and skip saunas for a week. Light blond, grey and red hair lacks the melanin target and cannot be treated effectively; treatment is also unsuitable during pregnancy and with epilepsy.
