Mole & Skin Cancer Screening (Digital Dermatoscopy)

Type

Dermatology Consultation

Duration

20 min

A preventive skin-cancer and mole check using both manual dermatoscopy (an epiluminescence magnifier at around 10x) and digital dermatoscopy, where moles are photographed, analysed on screen and archived so changes can be compared objectively between visits. The method helps detect melanoma and other skin cancers, such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, at an early stage. At Derma Blansko the exam is performed by a board-certified dermatovenerologist, is painless and non-invasive, and is suitable for everyone, including children and pregnant women.

Dermatoscopy is a non-invasive way to look at pigmented moles and other skin lesions in far more detail than the naked eye allows. At Derma Blansko it combines two techniques: a hand-held dermatoscope (an epiluminescence magnifier giving around tenfold magnification) for an immediate assessment, and digital dermatoscopy, in which individual lesions are photographed, displayed and analysed on a monitor in real time and then archived in the clinic's computer system. Because the images are stored, your moles can be compared objectively from one visit to the next, which is the single most useful way to spot the small changes that may signal a developing skin cancer such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. A typical appointment takes only a few minutes per region: the dermatovenerologist maps your moles, marks and documents any lesions of interest, reviews them on screen and gives you a medical assessment along with a recommendation — reassurance and a monitoring interval, a recommendation to remove a lesion, or referral for histology where appropriate. No preparation is needed; it is best to attend without make-up over the areas being checked and to point out any spot that has changed in size, shape, colour or symptom. The exam is painless, involves no cutting and carries essentially no downtime, so you can return to normal activities immediately. It suits anyone with numerous moles, a personal or family history of skin cancer, fair or sun-damaged skin, or a mole that has recently changed; the clinic recommends a check roughly once a year. For insured patients the examination is covered by Czech public health insurance; uninsured or self-pay patients pay the listed cash rates.
