Excessive Sweating Treatment (Botulinum Toxin)

An injectable treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) that uses botulinum toxin to temporarily switch off the overactive sweat glands in a treated area. It is most commonly used for the armpits, but the palms and soles can also be treated. Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is sweating beyond what the body needs to regulate temperature, and it can be socially and professionally distressing. Botulinum toxin treats it by temporarily blocking the chemical signal that activates the eccrine sweat glands in the treated skin, so they produce far less sweat. The armpits are the most commonly treated area, but the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet can also be addressed. Local anaesthesia is applied and a grid of small injections is placed just under the skin with a very fine needle; the procedure is described as almost painless and takes around half an hour. As with cosmetic botulinum toxin, the effect is not instant — sweating begins to reduce within two to three days, reaches its full effect at about 15 days, and the dry interval typically lasts three to six months before the treatment can be repeated. There is essentially no downtime, and most people return to normal activities immediately while avoiding heat and heavy exercise for the rest of the day.
