Upper Abdominal Ultrasound

Type

Blood Testing

Duration

25 min

An ultrasound assessment of the upper abdominal organs including liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, bile ducts, and kidneys. Screens for structural abnormalities, fatty liver, gallstones, and organ size variations.

The Upper Abdominal Ultrasound focuses on the six major organs of the upper abdomen, providing a targeted imaging assessment for individuals who want to check specific organs without the full abdominal scan. The examination uses standard B-mode ultrasound and is entirely non-invasive with no radiation exposure. The liver assessment evaluates size, echogenicity (texture), and fat content. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease affects a significant proportion of the adult population and is usually silent until advanced, making ultrasound one of the primary screening tools. The gallbladder is examined for stones, sludge, polyps, and wall thickening — gallstones are present in roughly 10-15 percent of adults and may be discovered incidentally. The spleen is assessed for enlargement, which can indicate infection, liver disease, or haematological conditions. The pancreas is examined to the extent visible on ultrasound (bowel gas can limit views), and the bile ducts are checked for dilation that may suggest downstream obstruction. Both kidneys are imaged for cysts, stones, size asymmetry, and cortical thinning. This scan is well suited as a first-line investigation for upper abdominal discomfort, as a follow-up to abnormal liver or kidney blood markers, or as a standalone preventive check for individuals with risk factors for fatty liver or gallstone disease.
