Lower Abdominal Ultrasound

Type

Blood Testing

Duration

20 min

An ultrasound assessment of the lower abdominal organs including the bladder and either the uterus (women, transabdominal) or prostate (men, transabdominal). Screens for structural abnormalities, cysts, and organ size variations.

The Lower Abdominal Ultrasound provides targeted imaging of the pelvic and lower abdominal structures using a transabdominal approach. For women, the examination assesses the uterus for size, position, fibroids, and structural abnormalities, along with a bladder evaluation. For men, the prostate is assessed transabdominally for size and gross structural changes, complemented by bladder volume and residual urine measurement. This scan is performed via the abdominal wall rather than transvaginally or transrectally, making it a comfortable and non-invasive option. While the transabdominal approach provides somewhat less detail than internal ultrasound for certain gynaecological or urological conditions, it is effective as a screening tool and is appropriate for initial assessment of symptoms or as a preventive check. The examination is particularly relevant for women experiencing menstrual irregularities, pelvic discomfort, or those wanting a baseline uterine assessment, and for men over 40 who want a non-invasive prostate size evaluation. A partially full bladder improves image quality for this scan, and the clinic provides preparation instructions at booking. Results are reviewed during a doctor consultation with written findings provided.
