Porcelain Crown (Metal-Ceramic / Full-Ceramic)
Type
Crowns & Bridges
Duration
1 hour
A crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged, weakened or root-treated tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. The practice offers metal-ceramic crowns, which combine a metal core with a porcelain surface, and full-ceramic crowns, which contain no metal for a more natural look. Crowns are shade-matched to neighbouring teeth. Where a tooth is badly broken down, a post-and-core may be placed first to provide a foundation for the crown.
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, effectively replacing its outer surface. Crowns are used to protect and rebuild teeth that are heavily decayed, cracked, worn or that have become brittle after root canal treatment, and to improve the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth. By encasing the tooth, a crown holds it together and redistributes the forces of chewing. At the Chlamtacz practice the tooth is first prepared by removing decay and shaping the remaining structure; for a severely broken-down tooth, a cast or fibre post-and-core may be cemented into the root canal to build up enough support. An impression or digital scan is then taken for the laboratory. Patients can choose a metal-ceramic crown, where porcelain is fused over a strong metal framework, or a full-ceramic crown with no metal substructure, which transmits light more like a natural tooth and is often selected for front teeth. The finished crown is checked for fit, contact with adjacent teeth and an even bite, then cemented in place. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, crowns are associated with many years of reliable service. The dentist advises on the most suitable material for each tooth's position and load at the planning visit.
