The rapid antibody test uses a fingerprick sample and delivers results within minutes during the appointment, making it the preferred option for routine screening when the most recent potential exposure was more than three weeks ago. The fourth-generation laboratory test adds p24 antigen detection to antibody screening, narrowing the diagnostic window to approximately two weeks post-exposure. This combination format is recommended when recent high-risk exposure has occurred, as the p24 antigen appears in blood before the immune system produces detectable antibodies. Laboratory results are typically available within two to four working days and can be collected in person or discussed by phone. Both testing pathways include structured pre-test counselling covering the test's capabilities and limitations, the meaning of reactive versus non-reactive results, and the window period relevant to the chosen test format. Post-test counselling addresses the result, next steps, and ongoing risk reduction. All testing is fully anonymous with no connection to insurance records or primary care documentation.
