Mammography excels at detecting microcalcifications — tiny calcium deposits that can be an early sign of breast cancer — while ultrasound better characterises solid masses and is particularly valuable in women with dense breast tissue, where mammographic sensitivity is reduced. The examination is performed by Capio's specialised mammography team, which operates at both the Hellerup and Aarhus campuses. The combined approach addresses a known limitation of mammography alone: dense breast tissue appears white on mammograms, and tumours also appear white, creating a masking effect that can result in missed findings. Ultrasound uses a different physical principle (sound waves rather than X-rays) and is unaffected by tissue density, providing a complementary imaging pathway. The appointment typically takes 30 to 45 minutes for both modalities. If suspicious findings are identified, biopsy capability is available at DKK 2,380 and breast cyst aspiration at DKK 950, enabling same-day tissue sampling without the need for a separate appointment. This integrated approach — screening, characterisation, and intervention in one department — is a practical advantage of having mammography within a full-service hospital rather than a standalone screening centre. The base price of DKK 2,770 includes both mammography and ultrasound and is subject to the 5% patient insurance surcharge. The mammography service is recommended for women over 40 as part of routine breast cancer screening, and for younger women with elevated risk factors or clinical findings warranting investigation.
