Teeth whitening is a safe, non-invasive way to lighten teeth that have darkened or yellowed with age, diet, smoking or staining. It uses a peroxide-based gel that breaks down stain molecules within the enamel and dentine to brighten the overall shade, without removing any tooth structure. At AS-Dent Studio in-office whitening uses the Opalescence Boost system, a chemically activated professional gel applied by the dentist with the gums carefully protected, giving a noticeable result in a single supervised session. Because the treatment is dentist-led, the concentration and timing are controlled and any sensitivity can be managed. A separate option, internal (non-vital) whitening, is used when a single tooth has darkened after root canal treatment: whitening agent is placed inside the tooth over two to four short visits to lighten it from within so it better matches its neighbours. Whitening is most effective on natural teeth and does not change the colour of existing fillings, crowns or veneers, so the dentist will discuss what result is realistic and whether any restorations on visible teeth might later need replacing to match. A check-up beforehand ensures the teeth and gums are healthy and identifies the cause of any staining. Mild, temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect and usually settles within a day or two. Whitening is generally suited to adults and is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding; suitability is confirmed at the appointment.
