LED Diode Mask (Photobiomodulation)

Type

Facial Rejuvenation

Duration

20 min

Multi-spectrum LED photobiomodulation using a diode mask that emits red, blue, green and violet light wavelengths to address a range of skin concerns painlessly and without UV exposure. Red light (625–700 nm) stimulates collagen synthesis and reduces inflammation; blue (440–500 nm) targets acne-causing bacteria; green (520–570 nm) addresses hyperpigmentation and lymphatic circulation; violet (400–420 nm) soothes rosacea and sunburn. At Artmedica Clinic Prague the LED mask is used as a stand-alone treatment and as a post-procedure adjunct to accelerate healing after laser or injectable treatments.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the therapeutic use of non-thermal light at specific wavelengths to modulate cellular function. The LED diode mask at Artmedica delivers four distinct spectral bands, each interacting with different chromophores and cellular targets in the skin to produce distinct biological effects. Red light at 625–700 nm is the most extensively studied PBM wavelength. Its primary cellular target is cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial respiratory chain — the enzyme that catalyses the final step of oxidative phosphorylation. Absorption of red light by this chromophore increases the enzyme's activity, leading to greater ATP production, reduced oxidative stress and reduced levels of pro-inflammatory reactive oxygen species. Fibroblasts exposed to red PBM demonstrate upregulated collagen and elastin gene expression; keratinocytes show accelerated proliferation and migration. These effects make red light particularly valuable for anti-aging collagen stimulation, wound healing acceleration after laser or injections, and general skin quality improvement. Blue light at 440–500 nm targets porphyrins produced by Cutibacterium acnes — the bacterium driving inflammatory acne. When C. acnes porphyrins absorb blue light, they generate singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species that are lethal to the bacterium but cause no damage to surrounding human tissue at the intensities used. Blue light treatment reduces bacterial load in the follicle, decreasing the inflammatory cascade that produces papules and pustules. For rosacea and inflammatory skin conditions, blue light also has direct anti-inflammatory action on mast cells. Green light at 520–570 nm affects melanocyte activity, reducing excessive melanin production that causes hyperpigmentation. It also has a mild vasodilatory effect that improves lymphatic circulation, aiding the clearance of inflammatory mediators and waste products from the skin. This makes it useful in the management of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and mild facial redness. Violet light at 400–420 nm shares the anti-bacterial properties of blue light while adding specific anti-inflammatory benefits useful in rosacea, UV-induced skin damage and sunburn. Combined with green and red settings, it contributes to comprehensive anti-redness protocols. At Artmedica Clinic Prague the LED mask is typically used in sessions of 15–20 minutes. Up to ten sessions are recommended for most indications. The treatment is entirely painless — patients experience gentle warmth from the mask — and requires no recovery. It is a standard post-procedure adjunct after the clinic's fractional CO2 laser, eMatrix RF and chemical peel treatments, reducing inflammation and accelerating re-epithelialisation.
