Botulinum toxin injections administered by physician to temporarily relax facial muscles driving expression lines — forehead, frown lines between the brows, crow's feet, nasal root, neck platysma, jaw masseter (bruxism), drooping mouth corners and smoker's lines. The injection session takes around 10 minutes; fine needles make the procedure nearly painless. Results last three to six months and with repeat treatments wrinkles gradually diminish as muscles are trained to contract less forcefully. Artmedica Clinic also offers botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of underarms, palms and soles) and migraine prevention.
Botulinum toxin works at the neuromuscular junction by blocking the release of acetylcholine — the chemical signal that triggers muscle contraction. When injected in a precisely calibrated dose into a specific facial muscle, that muscle relaxes, and the skin above it stops creasing with expression. The effect is entirely reversible: as the toxin is gradually metabolised over three to six months, normal nerve signalling resumes. With successive treatment cycles, many patients find that the treated muscles become habitually weaker and lines are less pronounced even between treatments. At Artmedica Clinic in Prague's Old Town, botulinum toxin injections are administered by MUDr. Kateřina Adamcová or MUDr. Alena Stumpfová. The physician maps facial muscle activity before injection — observing how the brow rises, where the frown engages, the exact distribution of crow's feet at full smile — to determine injection placement, depth and precise dose per muscle. Ultra-fine needles are used; the typical session covers one to four areas in around ten minutes with discomfort described by most patients as a series of brief pinpricks. Areas routinely treated at Artmedica include: horizontal forehead lines (frontalis muscle), vertical frown lines between the brows (corrugator and procerus), crow's feet (orbicularis oculi), nasal bunny lines, lip smoker's lines (perioral orbicularis), drooping mouth corners (depressor anguli oris), chin dimpling (mentalis), neck bands (platysma — the 'Nefertiti lift'), jaw masseter (reduction for bruxism and face-slimming) and brow lift (lateral orbicularis). For hyperhidrosis, botulinum toxin is deposited into the sweat glands of the underarms, palms or soles, blocking their neural stimulation for six to twelve months. Post-treatment instructions include remaining upright for four hours, avoiding intense exercise, saunas, alcohol and sun exposure for 48 hours, and not rubbing or pressing the treated area. Full effect becomes visible at seven to fourteen days. The clinic schedules a follow-up at two weeks for assessment and any minor top-up if needed.
