Medical ozone is triatomic oxygen (O3) generated from pharmaceutical-grade medical oxygen by a corona discharge generator, producing ozone concentrations typically ranging from 10 to 80 mcg/mL depending on the protocol and clinical indication. When introduced into the body, ozone reacts rapidly with biological molecules — particularly lipids and proteins — generating a controlled oxidative response (lipid oxidation products, reactive oxygen species) that is thought to trigger a cascade of compensatory antioxidant and immune modulation responses. Research literature has associated ozone therapy with effects including increased red blood cell oxygen-release efficiency (improved 2,3-DPG levels), modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine profiles, stimulation of antioxidant enzyme systems, and antimicrobial activity against certain pathogens.
