Belkyra Double Chin Treatment

Injectable fat-dissolving treatment using Belkyra (deoxycholic acid) to permanently reduce submental fat — the pocket of fat beneath the chin responsible for a 'double chin' appearance. Belkyra is the European approved name for the same molecule known as Kybella in North America. The active ingredient destroys fat cell membranes, and once broken down those cells cannot re-accumulate. Deoxycholic acid is a bile-derived molecule that the body naturally uses to emulsify and absorb dietary fats. When synthesised and injected in precise quantities into subcutaneous fat, it disrupts the phospholipid membranes of adipocytes — fat cells — causing them to lyse and be removed by the body's inflammatory and lymphatic clearance processes over the following weeks. The surrounding tissue (skin, muscle, nerve and vessel walls) tolerates the molecule at the concentrations used; only the adipocytes in the injection zone are selectively destroyed. At AE Derm MUDr. Helena Závodská marks a precise grid across the treatment zone beneath the chin before injecting small amounts of Belkyra at each point of the grid using a fine needle. The number of injections per session depends on the volume of submental fat and the dimensions of the treatment area. Immediately after treatment the zone is typically swollen, warm and tender — a predictable inflammatory response as the body processes the lysed fat cells. This swelling usually peaks in the first two to three days and largely resolves within one to two weeks, though some patients experience transient numbness or firmness that may persist for several weeks. Results develop gradually: the clearing of processed fat and the associated skin tightening response becomes visible over six to eight weeks after each session. Most patients need two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart to achieve the degree of contouring they want; the optimal number is assessed at each review. Because the destroyed fat cells do not regenerate, the improvement is long-lasting provided body weight is stable. Belkyra is suitable for adults with a moderate to significant submental fat deposit that persists despite diet and exercise. It is not a weight-loss tool and does not address loose or excess skin; patients with marked skin laxity may be better served by a combined approach discussed at consultation. Contraindications include infection in the treatment area, prior neck surgery or anatomy that complicates safe injection, and pregnancy or breastfeeding.
