Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is needed when the soft tissue inside a tooth — the pulp — becomes inflamed or infected, often because of deep decay, a crack or trauma. During treatment the dentist removes the diseased pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the fine canals inside the roots, disinfects them and then fills and seals the space to prevent further infection, so the tooth can be saved instead of being taken out.
