MRI Scan

Duration

45 min

Magnetic resonance imaging at the Radiodiagnostic Department of Vojenská nemocnice Olomouc covers all standard clinical indications — neurological, musculoskeletal, abdominal, pelvic and vascular — without ionising radiation. The department operates within a full-service military hospital in central Olomouc, with specialist radiologists reporting every examination. Self-pay patients can book without a referral and receive a written report on the day or shortly after the scan. The hospital's broad clinical base means that any significant finding can be followed up directly with the relevant specialist department.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnetic field and precisely tuned radio-frequency pulses to generate detailed cross-sectional images of soft tissues, organs, bone marrow and vascular structures. No X-ray or ionising radiation is involved, which makes MRI the preferred modality for repeat examinations, paediatric patients, and anatomical regions where detailed soft-tissue contrast is essential — particularly the brain, spinal cord, joints, and pelvic organs. At the Radiodiagnostic Department of Vojenská nemocnice Olomouc, MRI is available to self-pay patients across the full range of clinical body regions, subject to scheduling availability. The department operates within a state military hospital and is staffed by specialist radiologists (atestovaní radiologové) who report every examination in writing. The hospital's central position in Olomouc means that if an unexpected significant finding is identified, the patient can be directed to the relevant in-house specialist — cardiology, neurology, oncology or orthopaedics — without the delays associated with private imaging-only centres. A standard MRI examination requires the patient to lie still inside the scanner bore for approximately 30–45 minutes. The scanner produces loud rhythmic sounds during each sequence; hearing protection (earplugs or headphones) is provided as standard. Sequences are tailored to the clinical indication — for brain studies, T1, T2, FLAIR and DWI sequences are routinely acquired; for spine examinations, sagittal and axial T2 weightings highlight disc morphology and nerve root compression; for abdominal studies, fat-saturated sequences and breath-hold commands are used to minimise motion artefact. Intravenous gadolinium contrast may be administered where clinically indicated — common indications include post-operative spine (to distinguish recurrent disc from scar tissue), suspected inflammatory or neoplastic CNS pathology, and lesion characterisation in solid organs. Contrast requires a brief assessment for renal function (eGFR) and documented contrast allergy history before administration. Contraindications to MRI include ferromagnetic cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (absolute), intracranial ferromagnetic aneurysm clips (absolute), and metallic foreign bodies in the orbit (absolute). Most modern joint prostheses and spinal implants are MRI-conditional — patients should notify the department at booking with the make, model and year of any implanted device. Claustrophobia is managed through calm communication; if significant, the patient's GP may prescribe a mild anxiolytic before the appointment. Patients are advised to remove all metal objects (jewellery, piercings, watch, hearing aids, removable dental appliances) before entering the examination room. No fasting is required for brain or musculoskeletal studies; a 2-hour fast is recommended for abdominal MRI to reduce bowel motion artefact. The written radiologist report is typically available on the day or within 1–2 working days depending on study complexity.
