Duration

Cosmelan professional depigmentation protocol by Mesoestetic — a two-phase treatment combining an in-clinic depigmentation mask with a structured home maintenance programme to treat melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven skin tone.

Cosmelan is a medical-grade depigmentation system developed by the Spanish dermocosmetic laboratory Mesoestetic. It is one of the most widely used professional protocols for treating moderate to severe hyperpigmentation, including melasma, solar lentigines (sun spots), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne or injury, and hormonal pigmentation. The treatment works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis in melanocytes, through a combination of active depigmenting agents including azelaic acid, kojic acid, phytic acid, ascorbic acid, and arbutin. The in-clinic phase involves application of the Cosmelan 1 mask — a thick, occlusive depigmenting paste that is applied to the face and left in contact with the skin for a prescribed duration (typically 8-12 hours, determined by the practitioner based on skin type and pigmentation severity). The patient leaves the clinic with the mask in place and removes it at home according to the provided instructions. This extended contact time allows deep penetration of the active agents into the basal layer of the epidermis where melanocytes reside. In the days following mask removal, the skin undergoes controlled exfoliation — redness, tightness, and flaking are expected for 5-10 days. This desquamation phase removes the superficial layers of hyperpigmented skin while the depigmenting actives continue to suppress melanin production at the cellular level. The second phase involves daily home application of Cosmelan 2 maintenance cream for a minimum of 6 months. This cream contains lower concentrations of the same tyrosinase inhibitors and is applied to maintain melanin suppression, prevent pigmentation recurrence, and allow progressive lightening over the treatment course. Rigorous daily SPF 50+ protection is mandatory throughout the programme, as UV exposure can reactivate melanogenesis and reverse treatment results. The full Cosmelan protocol — including the in-clinic session, home aftercare kit, and follow-up appointments — is priced as a complete package at Viva Estetica.
