About this treatment

The Unilabs food intolerance test suite addresses the most common dietary intolerances that affect digestive comfort, energy levels, and nutritional status in Central European adults. Unlike food allergy (which involves IgE-mediated immune reactions and can cause anaphylaxis), food intolerances are metabolic or enzymatic in nature — the body lacks the capacity to digest or process certain food components, leading to gut symptoms, bloating, diarrhoea, and…

Lactose intolerance is caused by reduced expression of the lactase enzyme (which cleaves lactose into glucose and galactose for absorption) in adulthood — a genetically determined trait present in approximately 40–50% of European adults and over 70% of global adults. Two testing approaches are offered: genetic testing of the MCM6 gene variant (C13910T) that determines persistent lactase expression, and serological testing. Genetic testing is definitive —…

Fructose intolerance (hereditary fructose intolerance, HFI) caused by aldolase B deficiency is a rare condition, but fructose malabsorption (a separate, common condition of impaired fructose absorption in the small intestine) is far more prevalent. The genetic test available through Unilabs screens for the hereditary metabolic disorder; patients with functional fructose malabsorption may require a hydrogen breath test for definitive diagnosis.

Who is this for?

Unexplained bloating, IBS symptoms, post-meal discomfort, suspected lactose or gluten sensitivity, histamine reactions, patients wanting to clarify food-related symptoms before dietary restriction

Preparation required

No fasting required for most intolerance tests. Do not restrict gluten or the suspected food before testing — removing the food item before serology can cause a falsely negative result. Normal diet is essential for serological tests.

IgE kU/L

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a protein associated with allergic reactions that is normally found in very small amounts in the blood. IgE functions as part of the body's immune system (its defence against 'intruders').

IgG mg/dL

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most common type of antibody in the blood, important for fighting bacterial and viral infections.

pH pH units

Imbalances in gut pH influence short-chain fatty acid production and their effects.
