An MRI of the shoulder gives a detailed view of the complex soft-tissue anatomy of the joint: the four rotator-cuff tendons, the cartilage rim known as the labrum, the joint capsule and ligaments, the biceps tendon and the surrounding muscles, together with the bones of the shoulder. These structures are difficult to assess on plain X-rays, so MRI is the preferred way to examine them in depth.
