An MRCP is a specialised MRI of the bile ducts and pancreatic duct, using heavily fluid-weighted sequences that make these fluid-filled channels stand out. It is a non-invasive way to image the biliary system and is often arranged to look at the gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreatic duct. It is usually performed without contrast. The examination is carried out on the clinic's 3 Tesla scanner and read by a specialist radiologist, with a report within 72 hours.
Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, abbreviated MRCP, is a specialised MRI technique that focuses on the fluid-filled ducts of the biliary system and pancreas — the bile ducts, the gallbladder and the pancreatic duct. It uses heavily fluid-weighted sequences in which stationary fluid appears very bright, so the ducts and any narrowing, dilatation or filling defects within them can be assessed without any injection or instrumentation. At Ultra MR the examination is performed on a Siemens MAGNETOM 3 Tesla scanner and interpreted by a specialist in radiology and imaging diagnostics. The study provides a non-invasive alternative to more invasive endoscopic procedures for imaging the biliary tree, and is commonly requested to look at the gallbladder and bile ducts, for example when stones or duct problems are being considered, or to assess the pancreatic duct. For the best images the bowel should be quiet, so you are usually asked to avoid eating for a few hours beforehand; staff confirm the exact instructions when you book. During the scan you lie on your back and may be asked to hold your breath briefly for some sequences. MRCP is typically performed without contrast, which keeps the examination simple for most patients, although it can be combined with a contrast-enhanced abdominal study where this is requested. The appointment generally lasts around twenty-five to thirty minutes. The radiologist's written report is emailed within 72 hours, with express CITO and Ukrainian-language reporting available as paid options. No referral is required to book, and bringing previous imaging or ultrasound results helps with comparison.
