An MRI of the knee provides a detailed, three-dimensional view of the structures that make up the joint: the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, the medial and lateral collateral ligaments, the two menisci, the articular cartilage, the tendons around the joint and the underlying bone. Because these soft tissues are not visible on plain X-rays, MRI is the imaging method most often used to examine the knee in detail.
