The Clifford Clinic's gut microbiome screening service uses next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology to analyse the composition of the microbial community residing in the patient's gastrointestinal tract. The microbiome — comprising trillions of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses — plays a central role in digestion, immune regulation, metabolic efficiency, neurotransmitter production, and even skin health, making its assessment a meaningful component of a comprehensive longevity health profile. The test uses a non-invasive stool sample that patients can collect at home using the provided stool catcher and specimen container, then drop off at the clinic or post directly to the laboratory. The sample is analysed using shotgun metagenomic sequencing or 16S rRNA gene sequencing to identify the relative abundance of bacterial species and genera, compare the profile against a database with a specific focus on Asian-centric reference ranges, and generate insights relevant to the patient's reported symptoms, health goals, and dietary patterns. Results are reviewed by the clinic's physicians in a follow-up consultation, during which the microbiome profile is contextualised against the patient's health history. The review covers which bacterial populations are over- or under-represented, whether there are signs of dysbiosis (imbalanced microbial community) that may be contributing to bloating, irregular bowel habits, low mood, poor skin, or metabolic inefficiency, and what dietary and lifestyle modifications are most likely to shift the profile toward a healthier composition. Personalised nutritional counselling is included in the package, with specific prebiotic and probiotic recommendations, dietary fibre targets, and food avoidance guidance based on the individual's results. The screening is offered as a standalone service or as part of the clinic's broader longevity assessment programme.
