Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive body contouring technology based on the principle of cryolipolysis — the selective destruction of fat cells through controlled exposure to sub-zero temperatures. Adipocytes (fat cells) are significantly more susceptible to cold-induced apoptosis than surrounding tissue (skin, nerves, vessels), a distinction first identified in a Harvard Medical School study of children who developed cheek dimples after consuming ice lollies. This thermal selectivity forms the scientific basis for cryolipolysis as a fat reduction modality. The Cool Tech system — manufactured by Cocoon Medical (Spain) and used at Tesoro Clinic — uses an applicator that draws subcutaneous fat tissue into a vacuum cup and applies controlled cooling to reduce the tissue temperature to between -8°C and -10°C over a 70-minute treatment cycle. At this temperature range, adipocyte apoptosis is triggered: the cells crystallise internally and undergo programmed cell death without rupturing (which would cause inflammatory damage to surrounding tissue). The apoptotic cells are then cleared by the lymphatic system over the following 6 to 12 weeks, permanently reducing the number of fat cells in the treated zone. Clinical studies on cryolipolysis consistently demonstrate a 20 to 27% reduction in subcutaneous fat layer thickness per treated zone, measured by ultrasound or caliper assessment at 3 months post-treatment. The result is permanent in the sense that destroyed adipocytes do not regenerate — however, remaining adipocytes in the zone can still hypertrophy (expand) with weight gain, so the treatment is best suited to patients near their target weight seeking to contour specific resistant deposits.
