Type
Allergy Testing
Duration
10 min
A blood-based allergy screening panel measuring total IgE and specific IgE antibodies against common inhalation and food allergens. The panel covers house dust mites, grass and tree pollens, animal danders (cat, dog), moulds, and common food allergens including milk, egg, wheat, soy, peanut, and fish. Results quantify sensitisation levels on a scale from class 0 (negative) to class 6 (very high).
Blood-based allergy testing offers a practical alternative to skin prick testing for patients who cannot discontinue antihistamines, have extensive skin conditions like eczema that interfere with skin testing, or prefer a single blood draw over multiple skin punctures. The specific IgE panel measures circulating antibodies produced by the immune system in response to particular allergen proteins, quantifying the degree of sensitisation for each tested allergen. The SYNLAB panel covers the most prevalent allergen groups in the Munich region: birch, grass, and mugwort pollens (responsible for seasonal allergic rhinitis from March through September), house dust mites (the most common cause of perennial indoor allergy), pet danders, and mould spores. Food allergens include the major triggers for IgE-mediated reactions: cow's milk protein, hen's egg, wheat, soybean, peanut, and fish. Total IgE provides context for interpreting specific results, as elevated total IgE may indicate atopic disposition. Results are reported on a quantitative scale (kU/L) with corresponding sensitisation classes. It is important to note that sensitisation does not always equal clinical allergy — a positive IgE result indicates immune recognition of the allergen, but clinical relevance must be confirmed by correlating with symptoms. No fasting is required, and antihistamine use does not affect blood test results (unlike skin prick tests). Results are typically available within three to five working days.
