Liposuction at The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery employs two complementary techniques selected based on the treatment area and the density of the fat being addressed. Tumescent liposuction — the standard approach — involves infiltrating the treatment zone with a large volume of dilute lidocaine and epinephrine solution prior to fat removal. The tumescent fluid causes the fat cells to swell (tumescence), firms the tissue for more precise cannula movement, constricts blood vessels to reduce bleeding and bruising, and provides local anaesthesia that extends well into the post-operative period. Small cannulas attached to a vacuum system are then moved through the infiltrated fat layer in multiple directions (the cross-tunnel technique) to remove fat evenly and avoid surface irregularities. For fibrous areas — including the back, bra roll, flanks, and areas with prior treatment — the practice offers ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL), where a specially designed cannula emits ultrasonic energy that liquefies fat cells before aspiration. This pre-emulsification step reduces the mechanical effort required to remove fibrous fat, may improve skin retraction in appropriate candidates, and allows more precise contouring in anatomically challenging areas.
