The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery offers two facelift options tailored to the extent of facial ageing and the patient's recovery preferences. The full facelift addresses the cheeks, mid-face, jawline, and neck using extended incisions — typically from the temporal hairline, around the ear, and behind the auricle into the posterior hairline — that allow the surgeon to access and reposition the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system), the fibromuscular layer beneath the skin that descends with age and creates jowling, nasolabial fold deepening, and neck banding. Lifting and securing the SMAS separately from the skin distributes tension through two independent layers, enabling natural-looking repositioning without the 'pulled' appearance associated with skin-only techniques. Neck refinement — including platysma muscle plication and submental liposuction when indicated — is typically incorporated into the full facelift session. The MACS-Lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) is a shorter technique using two purse-string sutures placed through a limited incision in the sideburn and pre-auricular area to gather and lift the cheek fat pad and jawline tissue vertically. It requires smaller incisions than a full facelift and generally involves a shorter anaesthesia time and faster early recovery — return to work in approximately two weeks versus two to three weeks for the full procedure. The MACS technique is best suited to patients with mild to moderate jowling and mid-face descent who have adequate skin elasticity remaining. Both procedures are performed in the JCAHO-accredited in-office surgical suite. Results for the full facelift are associated with lasting five to ten years; the MACS-Lift typically lasts four to seven years.
