Porcelain / Zirconia Crown

Type

Crowns & Bridges

Duration

1 hour

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged, heavily filled or root-treated tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. STOMO Clinic offers metal-free all-ceramic and zirconia crowns for natural-looking aesthetics, as well as more economical porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Restorations are planned with digital iTero scanning for an accurate fit, and where a tooth is badly broken down a post-and-core can be placed first to support the crown.

A crown is an individually made restoration that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth, rebuilding it when a large filling, a fracture or root canal treatment has left it weakened. By enclosing the tooth, a crown protects what remains and restores normal biting function while matching the look of the surrounding teeth. At STOMO Clinic the process usually involves preparing the tooth, taking a digital impression with the iTero scanner and fitting the finished crown at a later visit, with a temporary crown in between. The clinic works mainly with all-ceramic and zirconia crowns, which contain no metal and transmit light in a way that closely resembles natural enamel, making them a popular choice for front teeth and for patients wanting the most aesthetic result. Zirconia is especially strong and well suited to back teeth and to bridges. A more budget-conscious porcelain-fused-to-metal option is also available. Where a tooth is extensively broken down or has been root-treated, a fibre or cast post-and-core build-up may be placed first to give the crown a solid foundation. Crowns are suited to adults with cracked, worn, discoloured or heavily restored teeth, or those wanting to improve the shape of individual teeth. The dentist confirms the best material and shade at consultation, and the same crowns are used to restore dental implants.
