Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a low-dose 3D X-ray that produces detailed cross-sectional images of the teeth, jawbone, nerves and sinuses. STOMO Clinic uses in-house CBCT to plan implants, assess impacted teeth and wisdom teeth, support complex root canal treatment and investigate jaw pathology. Field-of-view sizes are priced from small to large so the scan can be matched to what the dentist needs to see, keeping radiation as low as reasonable.
Cone-beam CT is a specialised dental imaging technique that rotates around the head to capture a three-dimensional volume of the teeth and jaws. Unlike a flat two-dimensional X-ray, a CBCT scan lets the dentist view structures from any angle and measure bone height, width and density accurately, as well as see the precise position of nerves, tooth roots and the sinuses. This makes it a key planning tool for several treatments offered at the clinic. At STOMO Clinic CBCT is used in-house to plan dental implants — confirming there is enough bone and placing the implant safely away from the nerve canal and sinus — to assess impacted and wisdom teeth before surgical removal, to investigate difficult root canal anatomy and failed root fillings, and to evaluate cysts, infections and other jaw pathology. The scan itself takes only seconds, is painless and requires no preparation; you simply stand or sit still while the machine rotates. The clinic offers different field-of-view sizes, from a small focused volume covering a few teeth up to a large field capturing both jaws, and selects the smallest area that answers the clinical question so that radiation exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable. CBCT delivers a higher dose than a standard dental X-ray but is still low, and is only taken when it will genuinely add diagnostic value. Standard panoramic (OPG) and single-tooth (RVG) X-rays are also available at lower cost for routine assessment. The dentist explains why a scan is recommended and reviews the images with you as part of treatment planning.
