A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that is too damaged, decayed, broken or loose to be restored, or that needs to come out for other reasons such as advanced gum disease or an impacted wisdom tooth. A simple extraction of a fully erupted tooth is the most common; a surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline or its roots require a small amount of bone to be eased away, and removal of an impacted tooth — frequently a wisdom tooth that has not fully come through — is the most complex.
