When a tooth has been missing for some time the surrounding bone tends to shrink, and in the upper back jaw the air-filled maxillary sinus can sit low over the ridge. Either situation can leave too little bone to anchor a dental implant securely. Bone augmentation and sinus-lift procedures address this by rebuilding or creating additional bone volume so an implant can be placed with a stable foundation. A sinus lift raises the floor of the sinus membrane to make room for bone in the upper jaw: a closed (internal) lift is a more conservative approach used when only a small increase in height is needed, while an open (lateral-window) lift is a larger procedure for cases requiring more substantial augmentation.
