Post & Core Build-Up (Fibre or Cast Post)

A reinforcing post fitted into the root of a tooth, with a core built on top to support a crown. After root canal treatment a tooth often lacks enough structure to hold a crown on its own; a post anchored in the canal provides a stable foundation. The clinic offers a tooth-coloured glass-fibre post or a stronger laboratory-made cast post, chosen according to how much of the tooth remains.

A post-and-core build-up restores a tooth that has been root-treated and is too broken down to retain a crown by itself. A post is cemented into one of the prepared root canals to anchor the restoration, and a core is built up around it to recreate the shape of the natural tooth crown, giving the laboratory-made crown that follows something solid to fit over. A glass-fibre post-and-core is placed directly by the dentist; the fibre material is tooth-coloured and its flexibility is similar to that of dentine, which some clinicians favour for distributing forces within the root. Alternatively, an indirect cast post core is made in the laboratory to fit the canal precisely and is well suited to teeth with little remaining structure or where greater rigidity is preferred, with the fee reflecting the complexity of the build-up required. The dentist will assess how much sound tooth remains, the position of the tooth and the forces it must bear before recommending the most appropriate option, after which a crown is made to complete the restoration.
