Post & Core Build-Up (Fibre or Cast Post)

A post-and-core build-up restores a tooth that has been root-treated and is too broken down to retain a crown by itself. A post is cemented into one of the prepared root canals to anchor the restoration, and a core is built up around it to recreate the shape of the natural tooth crown, giving the laboratory-made crown that follows something solid to fit over. Without this foundation, a crown placed on a badly damaged tooth would lack adequate support.

A glass-fibre post-and-core is placed directly by the dentist; the fibre material is tooth-coloured and its flexibility is similar to that of dentine, which some clinicians favour for distributing forces within the root.
