Scaling uses an ultrasonic scaler to break up and remove the hardened mineral deposits — tartar or calculus — that accumulate on the teeth and just beneath the gumline and which cannot be brushed away at home. Removing this build-up is associated with healthier gums, because the rough, bacteria-laden deposits that drive gum inflammation are cleared away.

The optional air-polishing stage, known in Polish as piaskowanie, directs a fine jet of powder and water across the tooth surfaces to lift away softer plaque and the surface stains left by coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, reaching into grooves and between teeth that are hard to clean.
